SunMum Mothers for Others: A Breastmilk Donation Drive by SunMum Philippines

by - August 29, 2019

In 2017, both UNICEF and the World Health Organization jointly urged the Philippine government to increase national investments to raise breastfeeding rates in the country. Did you know that only 34% of Filipino babies under six months old are breastfed exclusively? For this reason, around 7,500 Filipino children under 2 years of age die annually due to under-nutrition.

This is why it's imperative to strongly advocate breastfeeding. Not because it's stylish or because celebrities do it, but because the actual lives of thousands of Filipino children every year are at stake. Not only that, ample amount of evidence also shows that breastfeeding has cognitive and health benefits for both moms and their babies, especially in the first six months of life. It helps prevent diarrhea and pneumonia, which are the two major leading causes of death in infants. Moreover, breastfeeding moms have a reduced risk of ovarian and breast cancer, among others benefits.

While some moms actively choose not to breastfeed their babies, other moms, for one reason or another, have a hard time producing milk. Thankfully, there are thoughtful brands like SunMum who spearhead breast milk donation activities to encourage moms to help one another.

This August, SunMum Philippines has proudly unveiled #SunMumMothersForOthers to celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness Month, a campaign that pledge to donate one breast milk bag to the Philippine Human Milk Bank for every SunMum items sold.

Aside from that, they also have a weekly Milk Match activity, where moms who need breast milk can request donations from moms with extra supply. Sensitive information such as why they are requesting can also be discussed in private.

Personally, I never experienced donating or receiving breast milk. Thankfully, although I was not an oversupplier (of breast milk), I was able to produce enough to exclusively breastfeed my son for 6 months (afterwhich we started giving him breast milk + solids) despite my being a full-time working mom.

As a working pumping mom, I was a solid SunMum user. The quality of their breast milk storage bags is truly commendable. I never experienced any leakage nor spoilage of milk because of their triple lock system. Before, they only had the 8 oz bag but now they also have 3 oz, 4 oz, and the Breast Milk Stock Slider bag for keeping all your breast milk bags inside the freezer in one big bag.

Ps. Before publishing this post, I was planning to host a giveaway with these boxes of SunMum storage bags as prizes. However, there’s been a voice inside my head saying that I should start pumping and storing milk again for my son. We recently discovered that he’s terribly allergic to cow’s milk, and his grandmother has been bugging me to buy formula for him. While I believe that at 18 months he doesn’t really need milk but his diet should mainly be solids, there’s also a part of me that hopes I could still give him my milk whenever we’re not together (he still nurses directly to me).

So here I am, trying to pump again. Take note that I haven’t expressed milk for 6 months! I know it would take a LOT of effort to be able to collect milk the way I used to do, but I am willing to give it a try for my son. Hopefully, if I’m successful, I would also be able to donate milk to other babies in need. My goal is to fill all these bags with milk that SunMum sent me. I’ll give you updates, so please stay tuned. 💕
